Oddly enough, even though this book started out with actions happening quickly, it did not seem to start fast. It took me awhile to get in to this book, and given I've read so many books by Alan Black, I knew to stay with it.From my perspective this book really isn't about the adventure or fantasy as it was about its cast of characters and their interactions with each other. The pace moves quickly once it gets going and there is always something to keep your attention; yet it is the characters who keep you drawn into the book.
I wish I could say more, but anything else might give away a story line that is very much worth reading. I won't put spoilers here, so all I can do is suggest you read the book, it was well worth my time.

The story of how the crew that was cast overboard survived dangers from the sea, land, barbarians and recovered their stolen ship. Good story. Hated the ending, was too abrupt.
I was very disappointed with this story. I loved all the other Alan Black books, so was looking forward to this one. It seemed like this was written with no real thought to story. He went from one problem to another without really having any reason for them. Not his best effort.
Definitely not his best effort. After having read everything he has written and in some occasions numerous times. This is most definitely one that I won't . Plot is predictable, characters one dimensional. Very disappointed I purchased this with high expectations following his previous efforts.
The highly creative easy to read flowing writing of Alan Black suits me. He has not written anything i have not enjoyed and this book is no exception. It is a quest adventure with the resolute hero who finds love along the way. He has stalwart companions who triumph against the odds in a colourful backdrop of sea and land. A boys own adventure that is pure escapism. Mayhe write many moer equally enjoyable yarns.

Filled with action, suspects, humor and a little romance, the Quest for the White Wind is a fun exploration of a new world. Settle in and enjoy yourself.
Mr. Black continues to write books that I simply enjoy reading. I'm more of a science-fiction (space) fan than fantasy. But this book is simply excellent. The plot is rather simple agent of a foreign power hijacks a sailing ship, the captain and a number of the crew survive and go after them. It is the characters and adventures which make such a simple plot into an anti-gravity book (I couldn't put it down).
It has been many years since I last read a Fantasy story. I had just kind of 'moved on'.
But I love Mr Black's style of writing and humor and have read all of his books (including his non-fiction on how to write your first book).
I decided to read this book and really loved it. There was so much action I kept wanting for things to slow down so the poor characters could get a little rest. I was also in a 'style' different that I had read before. The hero does not use magic but is a normal man in a world that all the power is held by different magic factions. He has to fight magic with his courage, his wits, his friends and only a small amount of magic help from a friend.
